How it works

Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid (molecular weight 76.05 g/mol), so it penetrates skin and hair efficiently. On skin, it disrupts the calcium-dependent bonds between corneocytes to support renewal. In hair, it penetrates the cuticle and cortex and stabilizes alpha-keratin. Formulation pH and concentration are the two levers that set performance and tolerability, and our team helps you dial in both.

Data spotlight

Gentler by design

In a 21-day cumulative irritation study, 5% Glypure® GL produced no irritation responses, compared with 17 for 5% glycolic acid and 53 for 10% glycolic acid at pH 3.8 (n=20 per arm, AMA Laboratories).

0 5% Glypure® GL
17 5% glycolic acid, pH 3.8
53 10% glycolic acid, pH 3.8

Frequently asked questions

What pH should I formulate glycolic acid at?
For U.S. consumer products, CIR guidance calls for pH 3.5 or higher and 10% glycolic acid or less, with sun sensitivity labeling. Many exfoliating formulas target pH 3.5 to 4.4.
What are the EU limits?
The SCCS opinion sets a maximum of 4% at pH 3.8 or higher, with sun protection advice.
Which Glypure® grade should I use?
Glypure® 70 or 70 ULTRA for aqueous formulas, Glypure® 99 for anhydrous or low-water formats, and Glypure® GL for sensitive skin and leave-on anhydrous products.
When do I add glycolic acid?
Add it in the cooling phase and neutralize to target pH with a base such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide or AMP. Neutralization is exothermic.
Is Glypure® biodegradable?
Yes. Readily biodegradable: 89.6% in 7 days (OECD 301D).
